This is a topic that’s been done a thousand times over. The article below is based on questions I’ve often been asked over the past ten years. The questions are specific to dealing with small businesses and schools in Australia.
It’s not uncommon to ask a web designer about the cost of a website only to be met with the inevitable “how much is a piece of string?!”. The enormous range of options (and therefore expectations) out there nowadays is astounding.
Where does my money go?
Right-click on any webpage and choose ‘View Source’. Somebody had to write that code. The time taken even leading up to that equates to days if not weeks.
So why is WordPress so popular?
Put it this way, if you’d like us to write the code for you that’s no problem. We can certainly do that but be prepared to pay. A lot.
To build a basic, static website with say… five pages, where only we (the developer) have all the control over the content you could safely begin at around $4500 to write the code and process the images for you. That doesn’t include any dynamic functionality other than a contact form.
Remember, that figure factors in what it would take to write the code from scratch.
Alternatively you could use an existing html framework. You still wouldn’t have any control over the content, but much of the code is written for us.
Better still, we assume you want some level of control over the content right? So you’ll need a CMS (Content Management System). Enter WordPress.
WordPress is easy to manage and very search engine friendly. It’s also widely supported. It’s estimated that more than 23% of the worlds websites are built on WordPress. Here are some impressive statistics.
Being so widely supported means there are many ‘Plug-ins’ available. WordPress Plug-ins are basically modules of functionality. A Calendar for example, a photo gallery, a contact form. Again, each of these involve a lot of code to be written.
Code written by inexperienced programmers can leave your site vulnerable to hacks and all manner of nasties.
My Nephew could do it right?
The popularity of WordPress has also bred a generation of developers cutting their teeth writing code to build Plug-ins for WordPress. The result is that the quality varies. A lot. Code written by inexperienced programmers can leave your site vulnerable to hacks and all manner of nasties.
While the large majority of Plug-ins are free, Neurovision only uses Premium themes, frameworks and plugins. That is: we only purchase these WordPress resources from reputable sources.
So, we all know ‘you get what you pay for’. We’ve been doing this for years now, we’ve tried a load of options to find the most efficient method for building sites while maintaining quality and security.
A sites built by Neuro utilise the best, readily available resources so you get the best quality product for the best possible price.
